Holiday How-To: Festive Copper Napkin Rings

Tablescapes are my weakness in two regards: 1) I can’t resist beautiful table settings and swoon over every detail; and 2) linen napkins and place cards are like kryptonite for me and I immediately start to feel weak when I’m tasked with creating a tablescape on my own. So in summary – I love, love, love gorgeous tablescapes, but I always get nervous when I try to design them myself.
Based on the above dilemma, I always opt for a “less is more” approach when it comes to setting my table. And what I’ve come to learn is that, whether you go for super fancy or simple, your guests will enjoy themselves just gathering over good food and lots of laughs!
With the holidays and entertaining season upon us, I was looking to bring some sparkle to my table. I immediately flashed back to the oh-so-simple copper napkin rings I did last year. I loved their understated elegance and thought, with just a few additions, they’d be great for the holidays. So read on to learn how you can make these fun and festive napkin rings in a flash and with just a few supplies!
Check Your Garage and/or Toolbox
The first thing you’ll need is some heavy-gauge electrical wire. I had some extra laying around from old home repairs, but you can also buy this at Lowes or Home Depot. Figure out how many napkin rings you’d like to make. Using wire cutters, cut it into 12-inch lengths and strip the rubber coating off. You’ll be left with copper wires.
Wrap each piece of wire around a paper towel tube. Criss-cross and overlap the wire in random places to create a fun pattern. To close each ring, you may want to twist the ends together like a twist-tie in the back (my wire was thick enough that I didn’t have to do this—the rings retained their shape). This gives you simple, unadorned copper napkin rings. And now for the fun part…
Gather Some Holiday Embellishments
Gather some fun holiday embellishments that are smaller in size. I used mini pine cones that I found on one of our nature walks in the woods. But the options are endless in terms of “accessories” – sleigh bells, mini snowmen made from white poms, small ornaments. Just try to avoid anything that will shed glitter – no one wants to use a napkin covered in glitter.
Once you decide on your accessories, attach them to the front of the copper ring using very thin, silver floral wire. At this point, you could also add a place card so they don’t take up space on the table. Just print or write out the cards on festive paper, punch a hole in the corner and thread it onto the floral wire along with the accessories before you attach to the napkin ring!
Set the Table and Enjoy
Now that the napkin rings are done, decide how you’d like to set your table. In keeping with the “less is more” approach, I chose to roll my napkins and slip a napkin ring over each one. I added some fresh pine sprigs to dress things up and – voila! – simple, stylish place settings that are perfect for any holiday gathering!
